[comp.sys.att] Status of IDT?

sbw@naucse.UUCP (Steve Wampler) (10/10/88)

What is the status of the 3b1 SCSI card previously announced by IDT?
It seems to me that the last release date I saw was the end of
September.

If it's out, does anyone know what tape and disk drives work with it?

Yup, first August, then September, and then late October, now...

I called IDT this morning (Tues Oct 11) and spoke with a man by the
name of Mike Stein (hope I spelled that correctly) that works closely
with Matt Marshall (a man you are probably already familiar with, if
you've spoken to IDT regarding this issue). He basically said that a
current video project for the mac had taken presidence, causing the
development on the 3b1 SCSI card to slow down. This I could have
lived with, but he also went on to say that sometime in the next
couple of weeks that there will be some sort of meeting that a
corporate decision will be made of whether or not to "shelf" the 3b1
SCSI project until other products (ie. for the mac -- due to a larger
market) are finished.

When I asked Mr. Stein if the decision was not to "shelf" the
product, is there another estimated release date or if he had any idea
of such a date, he basically said that there was none.

There's one thing I'd like to ask to any other developers out there:

Does anyone of you see the market here for such products as
this SCSI card, and if you do, wouldn't you like to cash in on
	it? :+)

I'm not aware of what was projected to be supported, but it might not
matter if it never gets released. Sorry.

Perhaps now would be a good time for anyone who cares to give them
a call and express interest in it.

Perhaps I can shed some light on the IDT situation. I'm very close to
them, and have been talking to them on almost a daily basis. Here's what
I know.

First, the IDT SCSI is real, in hardware that is. Their problem all
along is SOFTWARE. Not enough documentation exsists for them to write a
decent SCSI device driver. They've used every outlet that they ( or I)
could think of, ATT. ATT VARS, Convergent, anybody and everybody, but
no luck.

So here's a plea in behalf of IDT: If you know how to write loadable
device drivers, or know where sufficient documentation can be had to help
them do it, then please call them. I'm sure they won't admit it, but
they need the software help.

Second, other projects (mainly for the Mac) are taking time away from the
SCSI development. If they had been further along with the software,
however, I'm sure the SCSI would be here by now.

More than IDT would be interested, since almost all AT&T sources of info
on the UNIX-PC have dried up, please post an article if you know where this
documentation can be had.

I have a 40-page document called the UNIX PC Version 3.0 Device
Driver Development Guide, that seems pretty thorough. It was
mentioned in one of the manuals that came with the system, including
an address where to write for it. I don't have the address handy
at the moment.

My copy probably isn't good enough to make additional copies from.
What we need to do is to track down a machine readable copy of
the document so we can spread it around.
