mike@mfgfoc.uucp (Mike Thompson) (10/14/88)
Greetings Unix PCers, About 6 weeks ago I posted a request for information regarding the AT&T 3B1 because I was interested in purchasing one. Well, to make a long story short, I did end up getting a 3B1 with 67M HD and 2M RAM with the Sys V version 3.51 (foundation and development). This was purchased from an ad placed in this news group. I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and suggestions. Well, now that I have such a beast, what is the easyest way to feed it with software. I have seen references to a net group called unix-pc.src, but I don't know how to get access to it. Is it possible from the S.F. Bay Area? I am interested in software such as gcc, g++, kcl and the likes. I have ported some software to it, but would prefer to get versions of software which someone already went over and massaged for the 3B1. I would also be interested contacting someone who has a large collection of 3B1 public domain software on disks, so that I could obtain copies of the disks (for a reasonable duplicating fee). I live in Los Altos, CA so the closer the better, but I would be willing to do it by mail. I would be willing to buy used versions of commercial software, but right now I can't pay all that much since the purchase of the computer used up my budget for the next few months. I would also be interested in finding out places to get commercial products for the 3B1 locally. Well those are my questions for now and thanks once again for all your previous responses to my questions. Hope that I can return the favor sometime. Here's posting about killer's UPC archives:
I recently posted a request for information about the source archives for
unix-pc.sources on killer. Since then I have seen requests to post this
information when I got it. Here you go.
------------------- Maessage 1 from gauss!wilber ------------------------
Here's the standard blurb on killer. In order to get to killer from my
3b1 using an external 4024 modem, I had to change the line for 2400 baud
access to:
killer Any ACU 2400 1-214-821-3795 "" \K\r\d\r in:--in: uupdsrc word: Public
Without the "break" the modem kept autobauding to the wrong speed.

Subject: How to get to the USENET sources archives via anonymous UUCP
Updated: 4 June 1988 by wisner
An archive of various public domain software is available to the general
public via anonymous UUCP from site killer. This file explains what is
available and how to get it.
Two sample L.sys lines follow, one for 2400 baud access and one for 1200.
killer Any ACU 2400 1-214-821-3795 in:--in: uupdsrc word: Public
killer Any ACU 1200 1-214-827-2919 in:--in: uupdsrc word: Public
Modify as necessary to fit local circumstances, of course.
We place no restrictions on use of these archives, but please try to be
reasonable.
If you have any requests, problems, suggestions, or whatever, send them
to wisner@killer.UUCP or {ames,att,decwrl,ihnp4,mit-eddie}!killer!wisner.
I suggest you retrieve the latest copy of this file before starting any
transfers since it is likely to change without notice at any time.
Almost all files are compressed using 16-bit compression. If you are on
a system where compress can only handle 12 bits, send me mail and special
arrangements can be made. Be warned that said arrangements may take a
while; I have been known to take up to two weeks to find the time to do
them. If you are on a PC clone running a version of UNIX such as Microport,
there IS an implementation of 16-bit compress available. Try posting an
article to comp.sources.wanted to find a copy.
Indices list files without the ".Z" suffix, even when the files are
compressed. When files are compressed, this fact will be noted in the
appropriate index. More on this later.
Don't use wildcards in requests. For example:
$ uucp killer!/bbsys4/sources/unix/v11/mush5.7/* ~nuucp
This will cause killer to attempt to queue all appropriate files for
transmission to your site, which will almost certainly fail since, to
killer, you're not a neighbor. In such cases you must request each
file separately.
If you find yourself using this archive frequently, you may want to be
added to my list of archive users. I send infrequent announcements about
the archives to this list.
Enough! Here's the part you've been waiting for:
Newsgroup Filename of Index
alt.sources /bbsys4/sources/alt/Index
comp.sources.games /bbsys4/sources/games/Index
comp.sources.misc /bbsys4/sources/misc/Index
comp.sources.unix /bbsys4/sources/unix/Index
unix-pc.sources /bbsys4/sources/unix-pc/Index
All USENET sources are compressed. Indices, of course, aren't.

The name of the archive keeper on killer (last I heard) is
Bill Wisner (wisner@killer.dallas.tx.us). The Index file is
included here as it appears on killer. The complete filename
for a file might be ... /bbsys4/sources/unix-pc/99.Z

To: Mike Thompson, et al (others in Silicon Valley with 3B1/UNIXpc/7300) I, too, reside in Los Altos and am the de facto UNIXPC Librarian of the AT&T USERS' GROUP sponsored and charted by AT&T (N.Bay meetings alternating between San Francisco and Oakland, S.Bay meetings in Sunnyvale). So far the UNIXpc SIG (Sunnyvale Chapter) comprises some 8-10 people. Syd Reid and Sharon DeLuca (sp?) of AT&T got the AT&T "The STORE!" disk and documentation for me to distribut to our members. You may wish to join the Users' Group (AT&T is a VERY gracious host!). I get the unix-pc.* newsgroups via PORTAL (located in Cupertino) and we're attempting to establish a uucp net of interested UNIXpc owners in this area. A "ton" of stuff exists for the UNIXpc and we're sharing it all. Besides having 4 of the beasts myself, I also have the complete schematics and REFERENCE MANUAL to help those with hardware problems (to give you an idea of the scope: 3 of those 4 systems are ones I rebuilt from scratch; the "big" 3B1 I bought new fully loaded). Feel welcome to send me email so we can all get together! AT&T (in Sunnyvale) is supporting our SIG, and people and AT&T and at various PacBell sites in the Bay Area are willing to lend a hand. Interest is also rising to band together and help IDT out with their SCSI interface. . One of the first orders of business is to get everyone up to speed with uucp, so don't delay! Keep those cards and letters coming. Call now, operators are standing by! :-) Thad Floryan [thad@cup.portal.com (OR) ...!sun!portal!cup.portal.com!thad]

If there is a UnixPC-specific group getting together, I'd like to join. A larger AT&T Unix-specific group would be fine, too. I just don't want to devote an entire evening to listening to a description of the latest and greatest PROMS and MSDOS release for the 6300. (No flames, please. I'm sure that owners of the 6300 don't want to listen to a discussion of IDT and their SCSI woes.) >Keep those cards and letters coming. Thanks for your message. At present, the only "officially" sponsored AT&T User Groups are here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mark Dill (AT&T Public Relations) is working on forming similar groups across the country. I think it'd be great that ALL of our groups be in contact. I don't have Mark's phone number handy (and he doesn't seem to have a Usenet address), so let's stay in touch either via e-mail or unix-pc.general or comp.sys.att On which newsgroup did you see my posting? This is important to be sure that maximum coverage is achieved. At present, the "local" AT&T groups are comprised mostly of people owning the 6300, 6312 and 6386 systems, but I've formed the informal SIG for the UNIX PC. There's a LOT of us out there as witnessed by the incredible amount of mail I've received today. Perhaps the unix-pc.* newsgroup can be the offical forum for sharing info amongst all of us. Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. I believe it would be beneficial also to conduct these meeting discussions in the newsgroups (e.g. unix-pc.general and comp.sys.att) just so that we attract the max audience. I'm still attempting to get some more phone lines (at home) so I can put one system on a dedicated line; the trunk in my area (presently) has insufficient copper to bring in more lines inexpensively. Sigh. Thad Thad Floryan [thad@cup.portal.com (OR) ...!sun!portal!cup.portal.com!thad]
