[comp.sys.att] AT&T 6386 vs Compaq 386/20

che@pbhyf.PacBell.COM (Mitch Che) (10/29/88)

I'm looking at AT&T's 6386 (20MHz) package CPU 373 with an 80MB hard
disk. This is about $1700. less than our prices for a comparable
Compaq 386/20 package (with a 40 MB disk). Our micro support group
suggested sticking with the Compaq, mentioning something about low
Norton performance on the AT&T. (Considering we're still using IBM
PC/XT's, anything is going to look faster!) However, anyone have some
specific numbers or comparisons they could provide me? (Or direct me
to?) Thanks in advance.

Well, I have an AT&T 6386 (16Mhz) with a 40MB HDU (I don't know the brand).
I ran SI & this is what it says:
Computing Index (CI), relative to IBM/XT: 16.9
Disk Index (DI), relative to IBM/XT: 2.8

Performance Index (PI), relative to IBM/XT: 12.2

So, a 16.9 on a 16Mhz box ain't too shabby. I'm just curious. Where can
you get the 373 for $1700? What is the price of the Compaq?
