The analysis of 2001 presented recently was quite right in its observations that the second half of the film was dealing with man serving technology and in some cases competing with it (a la HAL). This same theme is also seen in Dr. Strangelove. Throughout the second half of the film people are trying to stop technology (the bomber). In the end however the bomber gets through and technology triumphs (the "Doomsday device" destroys the world). There are several other themes in this movie, but the man versus technology aspect is definitely there.

For the sake of completeness of this discussion, it should be mentioned that the "humanity's next step" theme of 2001: A Space Odyssey is in many ways an echo of the same theme in Clarke's best novel, Childhood's End. ________________________________________________ Tim Maroney duke!unc!tim (USENET), tim.unc@udel-relay (ARPA) The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
