[comp.sys.att] EIA/RAM board with 512K expansion board

dave@arnold.UUCP (Dave Arnold) (11/30/88)

Well, I did it. I bought me a EIA/RAM expansion board.

Rats! Somethings wrong.

I have the EIA/RAM board populated with 1.0 meg.

I'm trying to install the EIA/RAM board and the 512k memory
board at the same time, but no matter where I put the boards,
diagnostics, and the boot screen say this:

.5 meg main memory
1.0 expansion

It never sees the 512k expansion board!

What's going on here!

If it makes any difference, the 512k expansion board I have is
pca d-60-00226-00 rev D

Thanks.

Hmm. The ONLY combination of this that will work is: Combo with 1M in any slot.
It will take up "memory slots" 0 and 1 no matter where you plug it in. Plug the
512K card in slot 3 (the one next to the serial port). It IS sensitive to
physical slot versus memory slot! The best solution is to put another 512K on
the Combo Board and do my mod to the 512K card to address it into memory slot
3 (the 4th one). This makes the card slot insensitive.

Re: Dave Arnold's problem installing 1.0MB EIA along with 0.5MB RAM ...

The UNIXpc Reference Manual (the one with the schematics, etc) and the UNIXpc
EIA/RAM Combo Board Installation Guides both contain a set of charts and tables
describing installation of such accessories.

Assuming your CPU has 0.5MB on the motherboard, there are only TWO combinations
of installing a 1.0MB EIA/RAM card and a 0.5MB RAM card per:

     +--------------------------------------------------+

                 BACK OF UNIXpc

     +--------------------------------------------------+
+------------+ +------------+ +------------+
     | | SLOT 1 | | SLOT 2 | | SLOT 3 | |
+------------+ +------------+ +------------+
     +--------------------------------------------------+

I. The 0.5MB RAM card *MUST* be in slot 3

II. The 1.0MB EIA card can be in EITHER slot 1 OR slot 2

That's it. The docs do NOT show any other valid combination or permutation.

It's working now. Thanks to everyone who replied.
Thank you Thad!
