[comp.sys.att] hard disk for old 3b2/300

rk@bigbroth.UUCP (rohan kelley) (01/10/89)

We just completed installation of the maxtor xt2190 into our 3b2/400.
We formatted it to 1024 cylinders just as the net postings indicate
is the limit. (didn't even try more). It gives us 135 mb formatted and
seems much faster than our present 72 meg fujitsu M2234AS (standard
equipment). With the idtools kit from ATT as recommended by Steve
Friedel @ vsi.com it was no problem.

This was installed as disk 1 (the second after disk0). It was slightly
trickier, however, to move our /usr to the new disk and then create /usr2
in the old /usr space. The process was accomplished by first mounting
the new disk as /mount, then "find"ing the /usr files | to cpio -pdum /mount.
When a duplicate of the /usr system was completed, we umounted both
systems, labelit /dev/dsk/c1d0s1 (the new disk) /usr and
/dev/dsk/c1d0s2 (the old /usr system) as /usr2. Then mount as the
appropriate file systems.

This leaves / on disk 0 and puts /usr on disk1. Hopefully that will
allow the sytem to run faster if a root seek and a /usr seek are
simultaneous.

NEXT QUESTION! We want to install a new disk in place of the old 30 meg
on an old 3b2/300. We understand 8 heads and 1024 cylinders is the
limit. We understand that a good candidate for that combination is the
PRIAM ID130 available from Storage Plus at $1385. Has anybody successfully
installed this disk or similar disk on an old 300?

We have installed Micropolis 1325's in 3B2/300 boxes
without troubles. They are 8 head/1024 cylinder drives.

We have two rather hefty hard disks that we are USING on our system
not including two standard 72MB disks provided by AT&T. As you can
see by the vtocs (Volume Table of Contents) listed below, we were able
to format the disks to their full capacity of 1224 cylinders. In order
to do this, you do need to use the AT&T IDTOOLS kit instead of the older
AT&T DEVTOOLS.

* /dev/rdsk/c2d1s0 (Maxtor 2190) partition map
*
* Dimensions:
*     512 bytes/sector
*      18 sectors/track
*      15 tracks/cylinder
*     270 sectors/cylinder
*    1224 cylinders
*    1222 accessible cylinders
*
* Flags:
*   1: unmountable
*  10: read-only
*
*                          First     Sector    Last
* Partition Tag Flags Sector Count Sector Mount Directory
       6      0    01          0    329940    329939
       7      0    01          0       270       269
       8      0    00        270    329670    329939   /usr4

* /dev/rdsk/c1d1s0 (Priam 519) partition map
*
* Dimensions:
*     512 bytes/sector
*      18 sectors/track
*      15 tracks/cylinder
*     270 sectors/cylinder
*    1224 cylinders
*    1222 accessible cylinders
*
* Flags:
*   1: unmountable
*  10: read-only
*
*                          First     Sector    Last
* Partition Tag Flags Sector Count Sector Mount Directory
       6      0    01          0    329940    329939
       7      0    01          0       270       269
       8      0    00        270    329670    329939   /usr

The parameters given for the disk physical info are as follows:

Manufacturer	Model	Size	ID	Cyl	Tr/Cyl	Sec/Trk	Bytes/Sec
=========================================================================
PRIAM		519	190Mb	10	1224	15	18	512
MAXTOR		2190	190Mb	10	1224	15	18	512

As a note, sometimes this physical info would not "take" the first time, so
what we would do is enter this information and the defect map under the
DEFECT option under IDTOOLS and then select FORMHARD under IDTOOLS in order
to do the actual formatting. Also, there were no hardware modifications
required to the motherboard in order to do this.

In answer to this question, both the MAXTOR and PRIAM drives were formatted
on an AT&T 3B2/300 before installation into the 3B2/400.
