I saw Barbarosa and Tender Mercies last night at the New Varsity Theatre, in Palo Alto, CA. Tender Mercies stars Robert Duvall as a country singer gone bad. He has let drinking ruin him and his career. He happens upon a small motel in rural East Texas, and falls in love with the owner, a young widow. He continues to struggle with his old life as a singer, and also with his ex-wife (also a singer) and daughter. Some very good singing of reasonably good country music is included in the movie, although not to excess. I very much liked the tone of the story, and the movie as a whole. The film was shot in a small town in East Texas, where the land is very flat. I reccomend that you see this movie. On the same bill, I saw Barbarosa, a film starring Willie Nelson as an outlaw in West Texas. He and his sidekick are both running from their wives' families, because they have both killed their brothers-in-law. Because the wives are still alive, neither man will go far enough away from the families to avoid the inevitable confrontation with the brothers bent on revenge. I very much enjoyed the tone of this movie also. The photography is stunning in places. Some of the movie was shot near Big Bend, in West Texas. If you think all of texas is flat plain, you should see the landscapes in this movie. I also wholeheartedly reccomend seeing this movie. -deborah gronke bennett Ampex Corporation fortune!dsd!atd!avsdT:deborah
