As I remember from deep in my memory, the rating M was for 'mature' audiences. I think it dates from the rating system previous to the one we use now (that is, g, pg, r, x). I think the old ones were g,m and x for general, mature, and x-rated audiences, respectively. Then again, I could be a crazed lunatic. -deborah gronke bennett

The three ratings used before the X-R-PG-G system were: M - Mature. Corresponds roughly to R (restricted) in the current system. MYP - Mature Young People. Corresponds roughly to PG. G - same as now. Films currently rated X were simply not produced or not allowed to be shown in commercial theatres in those days. The original ratings were G, M, R, and X, where "M" stood for "Mature audiences". Later the "M" was changed to "GP" (something like "General audiences -- Parental guidance recommended"), and still later it became "PG". Dave Seaman
