[comp.sys.att] ATT 3b2/400 and TCP/IP

mhampson@wpi.edu (Mark A. Hampson) (02/02/89)

We have recently implimented a campus-wide TCP-IP network and have
several AT&T 3B2/400 machines running S5. These machines each have
a transever port. Currently we have software to impliment '3BNET'.
(Yes, the inventors of UNIX did not include any TCP-IP support).

I am wondering if anyone has heard of any TCP-IP software for this
machine.

The Wollongong Group does TCP/IP products for 3B2s running SysV.
We're running it under SysVRel3.[02].

In a recent posting in this newsgroup, it was pointed out that
Wollongong TCP/IP is being sold by AT&T for their 3B2s. This
is true. However, any reader must be cautioned that this is
the most miserable implementation of TCP/IP available. In particular,
it tends not to communicate with Berkeley 4.3 systems (depending
on how the kernel was genned, but exactly what's important, AT&T
tech support has never been able to tell). There are other problems,
mostly related to routing (which most people won't care about;
using a 3B2 as an IP gateway isn't a typical application), and
the support for "standard Berkeley Idiosyncracies" is not good
(although, one must admit, not required for anything except
interoperability). I have been told that
there is a V2.2 release "in the offing" which resolves some of these
bugs, but readers looking for
IP on their 3B2 might be interested in talking to other vendors
first.

Disclaimer: I have no connection with any vendor of IP for
3B2s.

I've been looking around for awhile for other vendors of TCP/IP and NFS
software for 3B2's - what other choice besides AT&T do we have? No one
has been able to tell me what other products are available. Help please?

So, what other choices are their? Lachman sold theirs to AT&T.
AT&T is still sitting on it (when is it due out, anybody?)

I have not been able to locate any other TCP/IP vendors for
3B2s.
