[comp.sys.att] set 7300 modem to auto-answer

kit@falstaf.SanDiego.NCR.COM (Kit Chow) (02/07/89)

Can anyone tell me how I can set the internal modem on the 7300
to auto-answer?

Thanx in advance

The internal modem on the 7300 is controlled via the 'install' ua menu,
under 'Administration', 'Hardware setup', 'Telephone setup' (menus in that
order). The kicker is you have to tell the system you have a phone line
plugged into the second phone port, and you are using it for 'data'
communications (even if you want to use it for voice calls occasionally).
If you have the phone manager running, and make this change, you'll see the
top line change from VOICE2: IDLE to DATA or something like that. Log out
and the system should happily start a getty (or uugetty) on the port.

You should log in as "install" and go to HARDWARE SETUP. From there, you
can set up the obm, On-Board-Modem. Tell the form what line you have a line
on, and what line you have a phone on, etc... From there, the system should
update your /etc/inittab so that a getty will be fired up on ph0 when the
system boots up. This should allow your modem to auto-answer.

Note: There should be a line in /etc/inittab that looks like so:
ph0:2:respawn:/etc/getty ph0 1200

It should not look like so:
:ph0:2:respawn:/etc/getty ph0 1200

The ':' at the begging of the line is like a remark.
The note at the top of /etc/inittab says not to edit this file because it
is program-modified. I have installed a different getty on my Unix-pc for
the RS-232 port, and it works fine. I had to edit /etc/inittab with 'vi',
but I had some advice before doing so.

 I hope this helps...

Not neccessary. Configure the one and only line as VOICE. Then
use the 'phtoggle' command to toggle between DATA (auto-answer)
and VOICE mode. I use a cron job to toggle my machine into DATA
at 9:00 AM and back to VOICE at 5:00 PM. This way I can get
my usenet feed during the day while I'm at work, and still use
the phone for voice call when I'm at home (if a salesman calls
while I'm at work, let him eat carrier ;-).

I thought that when I upgraded to 3.5 from 3.0, I would get phtoggle. I can't
find it anywhere, however. Is phtoggle part of the 3.5 --> 3.51 upgrade kit?
I'd sure like to be able to switch this machine in and out of auto-answer with
the crontab.

I know it's been posted in the past, but now that I've got 3.5, would someone
mail me the list of changes between it and 3.51? Also, how does one upgrade
to 3.51 from 3.5, and how much does it cost?

Many thanks.
