We interrupt the dissection of 2001 to bring you four films
which (in our humble...) are not screened nearly enough
-----------------------------------------------------------
1. Every Man for Himself and God Against All (The Legend of Kaspar
Hauser). Germany 1974. d.Werner Herzog
Bruno S. is dropped into civilization after spending his
whole life in a cave. He is doomed to die because he
cannot accept the absurdities and contradictions of life we
take for granted. Would make an interesting double bill
with Trouffaut's "The Wild Child".
2. Intermezzo
USA 1939. d.Gregory Ratoff ph.Gregg Toland
A reknowned violinist (Leslie Howard) falls in love with
his musical protege (Ingrid Bergman never looking lovlier).
A scant 69 minutes is length, this film is a jewel. Remade
recently as "Honeysuckle Rose" with Willie Nelson and Amy
Irving.
3. Walkabout
Australia 1970. d/ph. Nicholas Roeg
A man kills himself in the desert, leaving his two small
children to trek among the Aborigines to safety. Screenplay
by the reknowned English dramatist Edward Bond (Saved, Lear,
The Sea).
4. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf
USA 1966. d.Mike Nichols ph.Haskell Wexler
Adapted from the Edward Albee play. In a word, SENSATIONAL!
A middle-aged history professor and his wife (Richard Burton
and Elizabeth Taylor) burden a new faculty member and his
(Geroge Segal and Sandy Dennis) with the garbage of their
American Dream gone sour. Oscars for Liz and Sandy, nomi-
nations for Burton, Segal, Nichols, and Wexler. Why this
isn't revered as a classic is beyond me. Seldom seen on TV.
Why??
We now return you to 2001: A Net Odyssey, already in progress.

"Inside Moves" (1980 - Dir. Richard Donner): John Savage plays a man who has become crippled while attempting suicide. He joins up with a group of other handicapped people and regains his self respect, and helps one of their group to realize his dream to play professional basketball by helping him get the operation he needs to be able to walk properly. An upbeat, off- beat film that played cable a few years ago and probably still turns up on TV. Wayne Citrin (ucbvax!citrin)
