This last week I went to a couple of very powerful anti-war films, presented at the Northwest Film Studies Center in Portland. The films were made back in the mid sixties by Peter Watkins, and are called CULLODEN and THE WAR GAME. CULLODEN is the depiction of the last battle of Bonnie Prince Charlie, a battle that has been described as the most mismanaged and gruesomest waste of human lives in history. THE WAR GAME is a postulates the effects of nuclear devistation on a community in England. Both films are done in newsreel style, given the audience the impression that the events are actually being filmed as they occur. Both films were produced under the auspices of the BBC, but to this day, THE WAR GAME has been banned from British television. Peter Watkins was present in Portland to introduce the films and to talk about a new project to produce a global anti-nuclear war film, to be shot in most of the major countries of the world. Not having seen it, Peter offered some severe speculations about the quality of THE DAY AFTER, soon to be aired on ABC (Nov 22, I think). I am looking forward to seeing THE DAY AFTER, but I recommend, if any of you get the chance, to see both CULLODEN and THE WAR GAME. -- Robert Reed, Tektronix Logic Design Systems, tektronix!tekgds!bobr
