[comp.sys.att] Idea on jacking up 3b1's cpu...

erict@flatline.UUCP (J. Eric Townsend) (04/07/89)

[Note: I'm not an engineer, nor do I play one on television. I don't even
have the hardware manual for the 3b1. :-]

1. Get/build a 680x0 based SingleBoardComputer, and put a 99 pin cardedge
	connector on it.

2. Disable the busdriver and cpu on the 3b1.

3. Get the sources for unix :-), and recompile them on/for the SBC.

4. Turn it on and let it rip.

Somehow, I didn't think so either...

This isn'tas amazingly painful as one might think. I was talking to
my local AT&T representitive the other day and he informed me that Educational
Institutions can get 3b1 system sources with some kind of limited licence for
the magic number of $3000.

Commercial licences are still going for the typical GNP of a third
world country, but if you happen to be attached to a university, $3K is pretty
reasonable.

Actually, the AT&T licensing people claim that Unix PC source is ONLY
available to educational institutions -- even commercial organizations
which already have a Unix source license can't get the Unix PC version
for any price.

Re: price of source of UNIX PC to educational institutions ...

Any Universal Life ministers out there?

How 'bout forming the "Churh of Latter Day Hackers". UNIX *IS* a religion,
isn't it? :-)

Then maybe we'd get a double discount: (1) educational, and (2) religious.

No flames, please; it's hot enough here (95+ in N.Calif); my brain must be
fried BOTH by the heat and by "doing" taxes. :-) :-)
