I have been waiting since Saturday and have not seen a review, so here goes. The latest Barbara Streisand movie was sold out at the Amboy theatre here in NJ. Of course, it was opening day. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It is about a woman who wants to get a formal religious Jewish education in a European society during the beginning of this century. She chooses to impersonate a man and enrolls in a school. I found the film enjoyable, and Streisand does sing many beautiful songs. It is somewhat reminiscent of "Educating Rita", which I also enjoyed recently. I think that "Tootsie" and "Victor Victoria" laid the groundwork for this movie. They made it acceptable for people to impersonate someone of a complementary (supplementary?) gender. The movie did have some technical flaws -- like inappropriate haircuts for that era, but would probably be enjoyed even by people without a Jewish background. It is based on a story by Isaac Bashevits Singer. Does anyone else have any comments on it? Do you think Streisand will lose money on it? -- -=> Avi E.
