[comp.sys.att] 3.51c about to be released?

dab@oswego.Oswego.EDU (Dave Bozak) (04/28/89)

In the May '89 issue of _UNIX World_ Jim Pickering writes (in the
Reader's Comments section) that he understands that 3.51c is about
to be released.

Is this true? How will we know?

Whatever happened to 3.51b? I've got 3.51a, and never knew of a 3.51b
(and I don't want that to happen with 3.51c!).

OK. There are two terminologies floating around, and while both are
accurate, they're confusing.

3.51a is a kernel version just like 3.51b, 3.51c and what-not.

Fixdisk 1.0 contained as a part of it, kernel 3.51c. Fixdisk 2.0 will
be released sometime in the future, and it will contain a new kernel
(3.51(?)).

Fixdisk 1.0 was released eons ago. The 3.51a kernel was a PART of
Fixdisk 1.0. It was not a standalone "product" if you will, but part
of the entire package.

What was known as 3.51b has been superceded internally by 3.51c.
3.51c (or whatever the end version may be called :-) will be a part of
the total Fixdisk 2.0 package.

Fixdisk 2.0 is not quite complete, and will need an adequate
verification phase once it is. No release date is given for 2.0 (I
have a good idea why, and it's a good thing to wait for). When 2.0 is
released, the most recent kernel (c or whatever) that has been
verified and tested will be a part of it.

As others have noted, you _can_ call the Hotline and request the 3.51c
kernel. At a time in the past, they would distribute it, but I don't
know what they're currently doing with it (that's assuming they know
what you're talking about :-).

If you have a problem with 3.51a, 3.51c MAY fix it, or it may not. If
you don't know of any pressing needs currently with 3.51a, hang on and
wait for Fixdisk 2.0.

The actual information (in detail) that you read has factual errors in
it, but there will be a new complete release sometime "soon".

So yes, except perhaps for specific details, it's true.

How will we know? The moment that release information is available,
I, another person, or an ATT-type expert will post the details.

A revised kernel is being worked on but is still in testing, and
several elusive bugs are still being tracked down. There will be
a new kernel (probably called 3.51c) but I wouldn't say its release
is imminent. Sorry, can't say more than that.

As I understand it, the Hotline folks were shipping 3.51b for about
two weeks, at which point some significant bugs surfaced and they
pulled it. The 3.51c kernel (or whatever it'll be called) should
fix these problems and more.

Even better, how do you get 3.51a! Who do you have to call and what kind of
story do you have to tell them?

Call up the AT&T Hotline (the number is in your manuals), identify
yourself as a 3b1 owner and request that they mail you Fixdisk 1.0
(aka, the 3.51a fixdisk).

Have your machines serial number ready. They'll ask for it.

The fixdisk is free of charge to all registered 3b1 owners.

Do the fixdisks do any good for people with 3.5 (i.e. is this a way to
upgrade to 3.51)?

No and yes.

No, the 3.51 fixdisks do no good for those running 3.5. As a matter
of fact, it would probably be Very Bad. There are fixdisks for 3.5,
however. The details of which I don't know.

Yes, you can upgrade to 3.51. But, you have to buy it. You don't get
a discount for turning in a 3.5 copy or anything, so you will have
just bought two operating systems.

Jim,

For your information, we at AT&T are using release 3.5.6D. As far as I know
this is not generally available to anyone outside the company; however you
might try contacting Convergent Tech. to obtain the closest VAR rep to your
location and they may be able to tell you more.

Convergent Technologies doesn't support these machines any more than AT&T
does... In fact I doubt they could help you at all. They would tell you to
call AT&T. I would tell you to call AT&T! Call 800-922-0354, and tell
the person that you want the UNIX PC Fixdisks which are available FREE OF
CHARGE to any registered 3B1/UNIX pc/7300 user. That will give you the 3.51a
kernel!

3.5.6D looks like a very old release of the 3.5 kernel. If that's what it
is, and you're running it at AT&T, you're behind the times :-) It sounds like
that is pretty useless to those running 3.51.
