Yes, Streamers is a somewhat dated play about the angst experienced by several young soldiers about to be sent to Vietnam. Yes, the play suffers from the creaking machinery that is now all too common in works by Edward Albee etc etc (once upon a time this was fresh and *different*!). Yes, the homosexual stereotype, the young black stud stereotype and the fresh-faced American boy steroetype are ... stereotypical. Yes, the clever dialogue and cute gags are somewhat forced. Yes, Streamers was directed by Robert Altman, and we all know what *he's* like. All the same I enjoyed it. I guess having read a review and having seen "Five and Dime" I knew what to expect and considered myself fully prepared. The truth is, if you can *accept* the sort of play that Streamers is -- think of it as a "period piece" -- then Altman's adaptation is very impressive (!). If, on the other hand, you think you'll puke if you see another play about Vietnam, then stay far away. There are lots of other films worth seeing.
