The reason for the title, as I recall, was that when the
author (Anthony Burgess?) was very young he heard one of his uncles
remark "That man is as crazy as a clockwork orange." While he had
no idea just what the phrase meant, it stuck with him, and he decided
that one day he would use it as a title. When "A Clockwork Orange"
was written, it was untitled. After it's completion, he realized
that this was just the book for that title.
