Probably because they were turning the main character into something
bizarre, unnatural, as would a clockwork orange be.

a

In the book, our hero laments the fact that, with his will and music taken
from him, he has been reduced to something less than human, a mere automaton,
a "clockwork orange."

Aye, me Droogs, a really horrorshow flicky-wicky, that. Hear, hear all
proper. Hear angel trumpets and devil trombones. Come, you are invited.

------
The movie got it's name from a Cockney expression, "crazy as a
clockwork orange." This explanation came from actor Michael Caine
during an interview with Dick Cavett back when he had been demoted
to a half hour on PBS. Caine was, I recall, quite sure of himself.

utcsstat!rao asks:

Does anyone know why that great movie is called by that name??

Because the screenplay was based on the book of the same title!

(sorry -- I couldn't pass this one up :-)

Because that was the name of the book. :-)

Actually, I believe it's Burgess's reference to the mechanization
of an organic entity -- in this case, Alex.

It was named after the novel it was based on. Where did author A Burgess get
it from? I dunno that.

The English expression is "Queer as a clockwork orange". I suspect
Michael Caine modified it to avoid antagonising anyone. You Americans
have a similar expression involving a three-dollar bill. True Cockney
expressions are usually based on rhyming slang. Here's one for net.movies:

    Going to the movies.
is
    Going to the dolly mixtures.

Don't get it? The English call the movies, the pictures. Dolly
mixtures is a kind of candy. Simple innit?
