re:Badges, we don't need no stinking badges. The origin of the badges line is in Treasure of the Sierra Madre. "Badges, we don't have no badges, we don't need no badges..." The quote you gave comes from Blazing Saddles. Tom Harris

I thought the "stinking badges line was from a comedy western with Rod Steiger and James Coburn, that I can't recall the name of. Steiger was a Mexican revolutionary in the Pancho Villa era, and Coburn was an IRA bomber on the lam in Mexico. The other line from that movie was "Duck, you sucker!", which Coburn said whenever he blew something up. Bob Schleicher ihuxk!rs55611 AT&T Bell Laboratories, Naperville, Ill.

---- OK, OK. I'm the culprit who submitted the "Badges.." line and offered the reference upon request. There seems to be some controversy (and I got a lot of mail) so... The original line is from "Treasure of the Sierra Madre", veritably spit out to Bogart by the slimy leader of even slimier banditos who try first to rob Bogart and his sidekick by claiming they are Federales. The line was used in "Blazing Saddles", though I can't remember where. (Thanks to Chuq for jogging my memory on that.) 2 other favorites from "Monty Python & the Holy Grail": "How do you know he's a king?" "He don't got any shit on his boots." "Lord? We don't have no lord. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune." -- *** *** JE MAINTIENDRAI ***** ***** ****** ****** 27 Jan 84 [8 Pluviose An CXCII] ken perlow ***** ***** (312)979-7261 ** ** ** ** ..ihnp4!ihuxq!ken *** ***

In Blazing Saddles, the line occured in the scene where the most despiacable bad men in the world were being deputized to go whup up on the town that Heddy (that's Hedley) Lamar wanted vacated. Snuggled between the WWII German squad and the Ku Klux Klan, was a group of *grubby* Mexican banditos. After the were signed up, Heddy gave the leader a badge. "Bajjess? We doan neeed no steenkeeng bajjess.", as he tosses it into the dirt. Seriously, I assume that the screen writers borrowed the line conciously in the spirit of satire. If they didn't, I'm sure the Guv (aka director) did. -- Lyle McElhaney (hao,brl-bmd,nbires,csu-cs,scgvaxd)!denelcor!lmc

[If this line isn't here, the bug is still unfixed.] I'm amazed at how often the "we don' need no stinkin' badges" line shows up. I don't recall which instances have come up on the net (besides the original in "Treasure of the Sierra Madre"), but "Blazing Saddles" worked it in nicely. Also a horrible (made-for-TV?) film called "Getting Wasted", where a critical plot twist depends on a character saying "Matches! We don' (...etc.)" and getting beaten up by insulted Hispanics. (The character has just seen this Bogie film, you see...) For some reason this line sticks in peoples' minds. Once, after "Sierra Madre" had shown at Dartmouth, someone came in looking for empty printer-paper boxes. Three people turned around and chorused "Boxes! We don' need no stinkin' boxes!" -- the box-hunter was kind of shaken by this. It's been a standard joke ever since... -- Mike Morton USENET: ..!decvax!dartvax!mike or ..!linus!dartvax!mike USMail: c/o Kiewit Computation Center, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755

I've held off commenting on the "We don't need no stinkin badges" because I expected lots of people to reply. I believe Bogart's movie "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (sp?) is the origin of the line. He is in the mountain with his partners and trying to protect his gold mine from bandits. The bandits claim to be police and Bogart asks for badges as proof (and as a stall tactic while getting into fighting positions). The reply from the bandits is "Badges?!? ha ha !! We don't need no stinkin badges!". Fighting ensues. -- Tim Curry USENET: decvax!ucf-cs!tim ARPANET: tim.ucf-cs@rand-relay
