[comp.sys.att] TCP/IP over Starlan

mike@glisten.UUCP (Michael Wendel) in <195@glisten.UUCP> mentions:

AT&T has announced Ethernet compatability (IEEE 802.3) with its
Starlan 10 product. I have AT&T literature on this product offering.
It is available directly from AT&T. They provide a toll free number
	for more information: 1-800-247-1212.

The original 1Mbit/sec StarLAN is also 802.3 compatible; more specifically,
ANSI/IEEE 802.3e-1988, Type 1BASE5.

The "new" StarLAN-10 is Type 10BASE5.

The syntax of those "Type" designations is:

	<Mbits/second> {BASEband or BROADband} <x 100 meters>

IEEE 802.3 (presently) permits any of coax, broadband, twisted-pair, and
fiber-optic technologies.

That compliance to IEEE 802.3 does NOT imply that one can "just" plug and
play different vendors' products. Some of the 8-10 StarLAN vendors' products
are (allegedly) not directly compatible (this comment from "LANS: Applications
of IEEE/ANSI 802 Standards", Madron, Wiley Books, ISBN 0-471-62049-1).

'Bout the only "real" thing in common with all the IEEE 802.3 compliant
networks is "CSMA/CD" (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection);
witness DECNet's compatibility to StarLAN.

As someone else once said:

"The nice thing about standards is there are so many from which to choose." :-
)

I have been running TCP on OLD starlan as well here is what you
do. (Replace nebulus with your hostname)

Add this to /usr/etc/inetinit.cf to run tcp over starlan
--------------------------------------------------------
sl0	/dev/net/nau/clone /dev/arp0	nebulus
sl0	/dev/arp /dev/ip0	nebulus

What about some way to run TCP/IP over the serial port? Is it possible? I've
looked in the "Enhanced TCP/IP WIN/3B LAN Interface" and they say nothing about
it. They neither say you can nor that you can't. I have a friend with an
Amiga running AmigaNOS that I would like to run SLIP to, but arghhh, I can't
figure out how to get the thing ifconfig'd!! Oh, BTW this is an ATT 3b1 that
I'm trying to do this from.

While I'm at it. Is there anywhere that lists what type of interfaces the
ifconfig command will recognize. The only one that the manual mentions is
en0. Perhaps there is an interface for the Serial Line. I see that sl0 is
the interface for StarLAN . . .

Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks,
- sparkie

wabit@cbnewsm.ATT.COM (david.w.mundhenk) (02/13/90)

We have received a package here recently called "StarGROUP Software
386 TCP Access Program", that runs on a 386 Server as a gateway to
TCP/IP protocols. Prerequisites are AT&T StarGROUP Software 386 OSI
Network Program Version 3.1 or later, and TCP/IP UNIX System Interface
Release 2.1 or later (a.k.a. Interlan NP622A...).
Hope this helps.

Dave
