Now for the quasi-bad news. You can't dial into your UNIXpc on ph0/1
and run layers. I forget the exact failure mode, but I think "layers"
claimed ph1 wasn't a tty. ("Oh, yeah? Sez who?")

Layers worked okay for me on tty000. However, a long time ago I
called the hotline to ask about the deal on ph lines. The guy I
talked with was surprised that I could get layers to work at all. He
claimed there were big time bugs and recommended I not use it, etc.
Well, like I said, it worked okay for me on tty000, but maybe it's one
of those things that works for some people and not for others.

(I don't know nuthin' about the bugs or the port of layers to the
UNIXpc. I'm just telling you what the guy told me.)

I don't know how they work, or if they work at all. I'm not fortunate
to own (or work with) a 630 terminal... but the xt-layers, and appropriate
drivers was already ported to the UNIX pc. You'll find it part of the

If anyone is selling a DMD/blit terminal let me know :-) Although MGR
gives me the look and feel on the console...

You might *try* to link /dev/phN to /dev/ttyphN. I've seen programs
that strncmp(ttydevice, "/dev/tty", 8) to check for the validity of
the tty devices. I don't know if this is *one* of those :->

dave) (02/19/90)

I have an AT&T 615 terminal and it is on tty000. Anyway, I have no problems
running layers. I haven't noticed any bugs or glitches in the past 2 1/2 years
of using the 615 w/layers. I do know for a fact that layers will NOT run on
any type of port other than a direct connect tty port. This info was also
confirmed by those wonderful(?) people at the AT&T Hotline.

As far as layers coming with the Development Set, I had to get a special disk
from my AT&T VAR to run layers.

The ideal situation is to have real computing power close at hand - right at home. Something that dims streetlights and shrinks the picture on the neighbors TV when you crank it up.
