Put this in the "for what its worth" department. I have a 2 meg 3b1 with a Miniscribe 6085 and a Voice Power board. The room here at home where the 3b1 sits is regulated to 71 deg. F with 50% relative humidity. I allowed the 3b1 to stabilize. The outlet air temperature at the fan grille is 90.7 deg. F. I allowed the system to stabilize with the monitor off, and the temperature read 88.1 deg. F. I am considering measuring temperature rise under an assortment of ambient conditions. The thought I have is to build an external safety deivce. If the temperature at the fan grille isn't some amount above ambient, the device could latch a relay open, cutting power to the 3b1. If the air flow stopped, the temperature just outisde the fan grille probably be less than the customary rise above ambient. That $20US Radio Shack temperature monitoring module comes to mind for use as a basis for such a project, The Radio shack module can be programmed to generate an alarm if the temperature is outside a pre-set limit.
