[comp.sys.att] System V 3.2 password setting and /etc/default/login

wtm@uhura.neoucom.EDU (Bill Mayhew) (10/26/90)

I tried to mail to Pete, but there seems to be a bug in address
resolution at neoucom (again! arrrrrgggh). The offending password
for nuucp may be clipped out by root running passmgt(1) on nuucp's
account.

Remember, though, that /etc/passwd is really a dummy file so that
things like who and finger continue to work. The real info in ine
/etc/shadow, which is root read only. Best to not try manual
editing of the password information.

Also, the factory delivered condition of /etc/default/login(4) is
to have the PASSREQ=YES set. This is why nuucp keeps being
prompted to set password. The root account may edit the file and
change to NO to get rid of the offending prompt. In a way, PASSREQ
is a bit silly, as no responsible system operator should create
user accounts without initial passwords.

So what's the diff between setting up nuucp as an anonymous uucp login
without a password, and publishing the password in the NJ USENET map?
And don't call me irresponsible! ;-)
