Two weeks ago, I posted my problem in running Microsoft Window 3 on ATT6300+ on the netnews. I get several replies with helpful hints. I thank you very much. In summary, a easy and cheap (it was not so cheap a few years ago! was > $250) solution for color monitor is to use STB board and disable the 6300+ internal graphic board. There is no real solution for using ATT's memory board as extended memory. No one have been able to run Win3 standard mode on ATT6300+. I also called Microsoft Product Support Services (206)454-2030 for help. I got John Martin on the phone. He is a nice guy. He called me back several times with different suggestions. None was working. He told me that he would ask help by post the problem in Microsoft internal corp network. I have not heard any thing yet. (ANYBODY IN MICROSOFT LISTENNING ???????) N. C. Wei ----- To disable internal display card version P4 ------- one has to disable internal display card before using another display card. To do so, you replace the 74LS00 chip at location 6H on display card with chip header. The chip header will have following pins connected: 3 to 8 to 11 to 14 and 6 to 7. ----- Here are two mails I received with useful hints ------ Subject: Re: running Window3 on ATT6300plus as far as the color part goes, are you aware of the board from STB? gives ega capability using the 318 monitor. Info is: Vendor: STB Systems 214-234-8750 Attn: Peggy Solis Parts: STB Multi-Res II p/n 110-0113-001 $79 Cable for AT&T 318 p/n 220-0012-001 $16 Ignore the drivers that they send, and use the standard windows ega ones. As far as real vs protected mode, one of our pc sorta-gurus tried several memory-things and had no luck. I'd appreciate hearing if you learn an easy way to do it. I knew very little about 6300+s before attempting the win3 install, so I too needed help. I found that help on an plus specific mailing list. You can subscribe to this list by sending a note to Bill Kennedy (bill\@ssbn.WLK.COM). You will have two types of bugaboos: display and memory. memory ------ We don't have the memory board, so I can't tell you about that. We do have 1MB on the motherboard, and we are using all of it. The top 384K is indeed extended memory, but it is not addressed beginning at 1024K as on most 286 systems. Instead it is addressed up nead 16MB. Himem.sys depends heavily on the 1024K location, so himem.sys cannot use that 384K. Since himem.sys is also the memory manager for win3, no windows application, including the current version of smartdrv.sys, can use that 384K. Fortunately, the win2.11 version of smartdrv.sys will work: device=c:\program\windows\smartdrv.sys /U 384 Where /U is a special (Upper memory) switch for 6300+s. Beware, however, that by doing so, you are not conforming to Microsoft's new extended memory/protected mode protocol DPMI. Since I don't use any other protected mode apps, I don't give a hoot. Supposedly, the AT&T memory board puts extended memory at 1024, but this may be changable with a DIP switch. display ------- You've got a choice 640x400 mono, or 640x200 color. To the best of my knowledge (and effort with an AT&T 318H color mon), win3 does not support the DEB, and thus does not support 640x400x16 color. On the plus (no pun) side of things, we are quite happy with 6300+ + win3, but then all we are using it for is to run a couple of terminal simultaneous terminal sessions. Ross !wc reply
