[net.movies] "Streetcar" remake

Anybody have comments on the made-for-TV remake of "Streetcar
Named Desire"? It's hard not to compare with the original
movie version, but I thought it stood up well overall.
Ann Margaret's portrayal of Blanche was powerful, but I
felt it lacking in fragility and vulnerability. Comparing
it with Vivien Leigh in the earlier version, this Blanche
came across as a much tougher lady. With Leigh it was
fully convincing that the rape would shatter her completely,
whereas Ann Margaret's Blanche seemed as though she would
have taken it in stride. It says a lot for Williams that
his Stanley didn't suffer terribly in comparison with Brando,
since Brando's assumption of the role is now historic.
The production and supporting roles were handled impressively -
a huge step ahead of what one normally gets on network TV.

I watched the TV remake of "Streetcar Named Desire" on Sunday, March 4.
My general comments are: it was very well done all around (acting, filming,
screenplay, etc.). Watching this show is one of the few times in a long
time that I was actually riveted to my TV set. This was a very quality
product. But then, the story gave them a lot of excellent material to
work with.

My one complaint (not really) was the way the show looked. I'm not familiar
with photography or filming techniques, but they must of used some sort of
special process to film this thing (any comments?). It had a very subdued
look. Sort of gloomy and faded. I know it really added to the mood of the
film, but until I got used to the look, it seemed like I needed to adjust
the brightness on my set.

I have never seen the original version of this film altough I am aware of
its reputation. I'm sure this newer version would stand up well to it.
In my opinion, this show was too good for television. It was superior to
almost any thing I have ever seen made for TV, and it was even better than
the majority of the stuff I've been seeing at the theatres lately.
Definitely a must see for anyone who appreciates fine drama. Check it out
if you ever get another chance.

I personally thought the made-for-tv version was but a shadow of the
original. Treat Williams does a reasonable job, but after watching Brando
all else pales in comparison. Ann Margaret portrayed a much stronger
character than Vivian Leigh did - I think I found Leigh's role more
believable.

I thought Brando's portrayal of Stanley K really dominated the original,
and that is what impressed me the most. What impressed me the most about
the remake was the excellent job done simulating rain in Louisiana.
