To the unix-pc crowd: this is my second draft at the charter. I got only a couple of responses to the last draft (interest is dropping, eh?) So I went back and did a scan of all the articles still on disk here to make sure I judged the consensus. I got 6 for comp.sys.*.3b1 (did not feel strongly about att) 3 for comp.sys.3b1 (either said please not att or did not indicate that the precise name was unimportant) 4 for comp.sys.att.3b1 (did want att in name) 1 forget the whole thing 7 sources should be moderated 1 unmoderated sources I based my charter draft on these numbers. I have to say I feel funny about having the att in the group but not in the sources, it seems inconsistent, but almost everybody specifically said comp.sources.3b1. --------------------comp.sys.att.3b1, charter, second draft------------------ Pardon me if this is not in standard charter format. I've never done one before and did not see any guidelines. CHARTER: newsgroups comp.sys.att.3b1 and comp.sources.3b1 1) Purpose: discussion and support of the AT&T 7300 / 3B1 / UNIXPC, and related Convergent Technologies (S/50, etc.), computer systems. These groups are to replace unix-pc.* which will be removed after a six-month transition period. The newsgroup is being moved into the comp hierarchy to solve problems with spotty distribution in North America and almost nonexistent distribution on other continents. The name change will also alleviate the present and growing confusion associated with the name 'unix-pc'. 2) groups to be created: comp.sys.att.3b1 (unmoderated) comp.sources.att.3b1 (moderated) These names have been carefully chosen for a number of reasons. There are three possible obvious strings to place in the last part, which are '7300', '3b1', and 'unixpc'. These are the three names under which the machine was sold by AT&T. 'unixpc' is not good since many people confuse this with IBM-PC clones running some unix flavor. '7300' is close to the names of several other systems, one of which is made by AT&T. This leaves us with '3b1'. The group will be placed under the comp.sys.att tree since there has been some interest expressed in reorganizing comp.sys.att along lines: comp.sys.att.63xx comp.sys.att.3b1 comp.sys.att.3b2 etc. The proposal is constructed so as to have this group be compatible with any future reorganization of comp.sys.att. Please note, this proposal is NOT intended to ENCOMPASS reorganization of comp.sys.att, only to be compatible with it, should it happen in the future. Groups exist with leading digits in some fields (comp.bugs.4bsd, comp.sys.nsc.32k, etc.) - there is no problem with the leading 3 in 3b1, contrary to myth. comp.sys.att.3b1 is for general discussions and replaces the groups unix-pc.general and unix-pc.uucp (which has little traffic.) comp.sources.3b1 is for posting of sources and official patches to these sources. it is moderated so that it will be in a form suitable for archiving at those sites which do this. dave@galaxia.Newport.RI.US has volunteered to be the moderator for this group and there are plans to have more than one moderator so as to speed posting of sources received. ------------------------------ We still need a volunteer to post the call for votes. I prefer "comp.sys.att.unix-pc" It is the only correct name for the group, and I can easily ignore any misdirected IBM-PC postings. Such postings will be less common anyway since the group will be well hidden in a maze of twisty newsgroup hierarchies, all different. -=] Ford [=- "The number of Unix installations (In Real Life: Mike Ditto) has grown to 10, with more expected." ditto@amix.commodore.com - The Unix Programmer's Manual, uunet!cbmvax!ditto 2nd Edition, June, 1972. ford@kenobi.commodore.com
