[comp.sys.att] Formatting Hard Drive for 3b2/310

murthy@algron.cs.cornell.edu (Chet Murthy) (12/06/90)

I have a 3b2/310, and I need to format a Micropolis 1325H drive for
it. Does anybody out there know how I can do this without an ID Tools
diskette? (I can't find one around here)

To format a hard disk, use 'fmthard /dev/rdsk/device_name'. If the device
does not exist, go into firmware mode (shutdown -y -g0 -i5) and run 'filledt'
and the generate a new unix by running '/etc/system'. This should create the
devices.

NO! Fmthard does NOT do a physical format at all -- it just writes
the partition tables and optionally makes filesystems. You absolutely,
positively cannot format a drive without idtools.
