I just went to see "Splash" last week and found it to be a fun movie. It is basically a very funny romantic fairy tale about a man who meets a mermaid as a child and then runs into her again on a beach 300 miles from his home. John Candy plays his brother and does a splended job of maintaining a light touch during the entire movie. If you like comedies or romance, and are in the mood for a good time, see Splash! MOVIE STINKS

Although I wouldn't go as far as the person who said "MOVIE STINKS", I must say that this movie was a big disappointment for me. I don't know what I expected, but the movie on the whole seemed rather flat and uninteresting. The big plusses were Darryl Hannah as the mermaid, who was very sweet and charming, and John Candy, who is always hilarious (by the way, wouldn't he make a great Ignatius Reilly in a film version of "Confederacy of Dunces"). The big minuses are the *script*, Tom Hanks (seemed to be doing third-rate Bill Murray, who I think is second-rate to begin with) and Eugene Levy, who was particularly awful! The film didn't seem to capture the whimsy the over-zealous critics claimed it did, and contrary to what I've read, Ron Howard's direction was strictly "TV": close-ups and medium shots, mostly, very static. In addition, I thought the scenes when Hannah was exposed and captured to be rather disturb- ing (mean and sad), especially the bit where Levy sprays her with water in an obvious parody of the assassination attempt on Reagan that was shown on TV ad nauseum. All in all, it could have been a lot better. ---Rick Urban AT&T Network Systems Columbus, Ohio

Since you are a minority of one in your opinion of "Splash" as
expressed in net.movies, in what ways does "Splash" stink?

Here's another vote for Splash. It's (almost) predictable but (fairly) entertaining, and surprisingly erotic for being a light comedy. Paced pretty well, with only a little slapstick (and some serious moments). Alan Silverstein
