Some comments on a few films I've seen recently. That Sinking Feeling - Bill Forsyth's (Gregory's Girl, Local Hero) first feature film, although the third released here. A lot of the whimsical comic touches that characterize his other films, but extremely unpolished. The humor is a lot broader than in later films and the young cast doesn't really know how to act. (A number of them also appear in Forsyth's "Gregory's Girl" and by that time were much better actors.) The friend I saw it with remarked that it looked like a thesis film by a very promising student. I suggest that you not bother seeing it on a single bill unless you are already a Forsyth fan since it's really not all that good. If it's showing on a double bill with Gregory's Girl or Local Hero, by all means see it as an example of how much Forsyth's improved (and because the other movies are well worth seeing). (rating: **1/2 of ****) Vertigo - If I told you anything about this re-released Hitchcock film, it would be a spoiler, so I won't say anything other than that it's an incredible psychological thriller and that everyone should see it. (rating: **** of ****) Romancing the Stone - I agree with everything that's been said about it on the net. It's a lot of fun and it doesn't take itself at all seriously. Good fun.
