[net.movies] Cannes Film Festival

An article on the Cannes Film Festival in Friday's New York Times reported
that the two US entries in the competition were "Under the Volcano,"
John Huston's adaptation of Malcolm Lowery's novel, and "The Bounty."
"Under the Volcano" is a good choice since it will probably attract a lot of
attention, but why was "The Bounty" chosen? With an English and Australian
cast, Italian producer and New Zealand director, should it really be
considered an offering of the American film industry? I would think
that "The Natural" would be a much better choice than "The Bounty"
since it has at least as much prestige and it's truly a piece of Americana,
in addition to being an American production by any standard.

A question: Who chooses the American entries to Cannes? I've heard that
it's the US Information Agency, through a panel that they appoint. Is this
true?
