[comp.sys.att] 3B2/300 and SysVr3.2

pss610@unhd.unh.edu (Paul S Secinaro) (05/12/91)

We have an old 3B2/300 in the lab that we have been trying to get running.
It is currently using AT&T SVR2.0, but nobody remembers any of the passwords
(we got this machine from another department), and we don't have
any of the Release 2.0 core disks. We do have Release 3.2, which runs just
fine on a 3B2/400, but when I try to install it on the 300, it gets
as far as the opening copyright message, then prints INSTALLATION NOT
COMPLETED, and dumps me back into firmware mode. Could this be some
kind of ROM compatibility problem? The firmware VERSION command prints out:

  Created: 7/24/84
  Issue: 0b0b0b0b
  Release: 1.1
  Load: 1S4.3
  Serial Number: 0B108139

Is there any hope for this beast? If not, it will be consigned to the parts
box (by the way, does anyone know if you can use the hard drive with an
MFM controller in an IBM PC/AT bus machine? This is a 30 Meg unit made by
CDC. The connectors in back look like standard MFM/RLL, but there's no way
to tell for sure.
Thanks.
