I have recently aquired an AT&T 3B2/310 with 5.25" floppy, 4 MB RAM and 72 MB HD. I purchased the system as a way to learn UNIX, but need some help to get started. The difficulties I am having are related to logging on. Of course, the current superuser password has been lost. The documentation I have seems complete, and the next step appears to be a partial re-install of the kernel. But... 1) Firmware error when booting from floppy key or when trying to run UNIX task from firmware mode. Firmware mode is accessible. NVRAM error on boot-up makes me assume that the default firmware password has been restored by the system when NVRAM was cleared. The firmware error is 1-06. Is this a floppy error? If so: a) Are these any more diagnostics that I can perform myself? b) Am I using the proper Core System disks? (Essential Utilities disks 1 through 5, correct?) c) Is the floppy drive (720Kbytes) compatible/replacible with anything is the PC world? d) Can I obtain schematics for the system? Where? How much? e) Is there a comparable system near me that I can confirm the integrity of my core system disks against? My version is SVR2.??. I can get more info if required. f) What type of floppy disks (DD, HD) do I need? 2) If this is not a floppy error, what does it indicate? Can I do more general tests? Is there a source of support for "casual users" of the 3B2 line or aftermarket support? 3) Is an upgrade to SVR 3.?? possible? If so, what will I gain? How much will it cost? Where can I get the upgrade? I appreciate any help that may be given. Respond to kbeau@ersys.edmonton.ab.ca Please excuse the end of the message. I am also new to USENET.
