[comp.sys.att] BLIT vs AT&T 630MTG

jeffrey@sci.ccny.cuny.edu (Jeffrey L Bromberger) (06/10/91)

Hello again. Here's the situation. I have a 3b2 running SVR3.1, and
I have 2 terminals for it. One is a 5620, and the other is an AT&T
630MTG. For the 5620, I have the 2.0 release of the core utilities,
font stuff, text stuff, and development things. For the 630, I have
the "Windowing Utilities" disk that came with the initial
distribution, and the 630MTG development package.

Needless to say, I prefer the newer 630 over the older BLIT. From a
quick glance, both can do layers. But before I retire the 5620 to a
closet, I have 2 questions for the experts. First, does the 630 come
with "nice" software like cip and a ditroff/tek4010 previewer? The
documentation mentions a copy of jim, but nothing else. Does this
mean that I'm SOL for the other programs? :-) Are there PD versions,
preferrably not from the Toolche$t?

Secondly (and probably most importantly), can the 630 do everything
computationally the 5620 can? I realize that the 630 has a 68K processor
unlike the 5620. I want to try my hand at programming it, though, and
would hate to be unable to do everything the BLIT could do.

Many thanks to anyone who can answer these questions for me.

j

BTW: How to tell the ROM level on the BLIT? The 630's setup screen
tells me that I have over 1 meg RAM and version "8;8;6" ROMs. Is
there an easy way to find this on the 5620?

there is xcip for the 630. i can't see any differences from cip, but
it may have some subtle fixes/enhancements.
there's also xtek4010, a terminal emulator; and xproof, for troff
previewing.

the 630 can probably do everything the 5620 can, and more!
you may also want to spend the bucks (~$200, i think) to upgrade your
630 to a 730. this buys you 6 roms with many, many enhancements and
fixes...

shift-setup. does your 5620 have layers in rom & 1M?

The AT&T UNIX System Toolchest offers a "630pkg" containing modernized
versions of essentially all the 5620 utilities you have come to like.
Also, consider the "sam" editor offered by the Toolchest; it's a much
improved version of "jim", and once you have a license for "sam", you
can get an improved version that also supports Suntools and X-Windows
from me.

Essentially, yes. Its firmware and support software are pretty much
supersets of the 5620's.

The easiest is to press SHIFT+SETUP and see what is displayed.
(If no version is displayed, you have 8;7;1 or 8;7;2, which are pretty
old. 8;7;5 is the latest that I know of.)

Browsing the toolchest yesterday showed the whole schmeer (630_pkg) at
$100 for source and docs. Not as bad as ksh88f :-( It looks like
that's what I'm going to have to do. I don't believe that anyone can
"sell" me their unused copies of the stuff. And binary distribution
has been disallowed...

But, will this break all the 630_dev (development package) stuff I
have? As long as it will still operate, then that's a reasonable
option. Right now, though, the 630 has a memory expn card (256K) and
an extra serial/SSI port card.

Well, the ROMS are 8;7;5 (dated from 1984) and it has 256K memory. Do
they have memory upgrades for this thing? Is it worth it? Are the
ROMS fairly recent (I seem to remmeber that this was the last revlev)?

And, BTW, what is that "Parallel I/O" thingie used for? It is a
standard ribbon cable header, but I have no idea what I could ever use
it for.

Thanks again!

Well, I am writting this from a 730 with 4 meg of ram, connected by Starlan 10
to a large pool of 3b2's. We have used both the 630 and 730 terminals for
our software platform. Upgrading to a 730 won't break your 630 apps, but
the key mapping changes. There is a key replacement kit available to put the
right keys in the right place. The 730 can take a cartridge in the game slot
to make it into an OK X terminal, but the 630 can't. Changes in the tli code
in the rom is why.

I personally would keep the 630.
