          		The Definitive Summer Movie List

				Part 1

May 4:

"The Bounty"    Mel Gibson plays Fletcher Christian against Anthony Hopkins
Orion 		Capt. Bligh in this third Hollywood version of Mutiny on the
Dolby Stereo	Bounty, produced by Dino DeLaurentiis and directed by New
		Zealand's Roger Donaldson ("Smash Palace").  Laurence Olivier
		and Edward Fox co-star in this $25M spectacle.  Advance
		word is fantastic.  Better even than the original Best Picture
		winning film with Gable and Laughton.  A great performance
		by Hopkins.  

"Sixteen Candles" 
Universal	Molly Ringwald ("Spacehunter", "Tempest") is back in a
		bittersweet tale about turning sweet 16, featuring Paul
		Dooley, Carlin Glynn, Justin Henry, Blanche Baker and
		Anthony Michael Hall.  Directed and written by John Hughes
		(who wrote "Mr. Mom"), produced by Hilton Green.

"Alphabet City"	Vincent Spano ("Baby It's You", "Rumble Fish") stars as the
Atlantic Rel.	"king" of that section of New York's East Village in Amos
		Poe's Saturday Night Fever-like drama.  Nile Rodgers, who
		produced David Bowie's "Let's Dance" album, has written
		an original score.  

May 11:

"Firestarter"	Drew Barrymore ("ET") portrays the little girl who can will
Universal	objects to ignite and David Keith ("An Officer and A Gentleman")
Dolby Stereo	is her father who possesses special powers of persuasion in
		the film adaptation of Stephen King's bestseller.  Mark Lester
		directed the Dino DeLaurentiis production from Stanley Mann's
		script.  The stellar cast includes George C. Scott, Martin
		Sheen, Heather Locklear, Moses Gunn, Freddie Jones, Louise
		Fletcher and Art Carney.

"The Natural"	This period baseball drama based on the novel by Bernard
Tri-Star	Malamud boasts a powerhouse cast:  Robert Redford, Robert
Dolby Stereo	Duvall, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger, Barbara Hershey, Wilford
		Brimley and Richard Farnsworth, all under Barry ("Diner")
		Levinson's direction.  Caleb ("The Right Stuff", "The Black
		Stallion") Deschanel was cinematographer and Randy Newman
		wrote the music.


May 18:

"Making the Grade"
MGM/UA (Cannon)	This comedy concerns Eddie Keaton, a street kid frlom New
		Jersey who is hired by wealthy Palmer Woodrow III to stand
		in for him during the entire school year at exclusive 
		Hoover Academy.  Judd Nelson and Carey Scott star in this
		Golan-Globus production of a Gene Quintano script.

May 23:
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"
Paramount (Lucasfilm)
70MM Dolby Stereo
		This eagerly awaited $27M prequel to the wildly successful
		"Raiders of the Lost Ark" has Harrison Ford reprising his
		role and Kate Capshaw as his romantic interest.  Steven
		Spielberg again directs and George Lucas and Frank Marshall
		exec produce.  Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck ("American
		Graffitti") wrote the screenplay.

June 1:
"Star Trek III: The Search for Spock"
Paramount
70MM Dolby Stereo
		Leonard Nimoy makes his debut as feature film director with
		this $15M production.  William Shatner, DeForest Kelley,
		etc. return from the second film, with Kirstie Alley's role
		of Saavik taken over by Robin Curtis (she wanted too much
		money).  Dame Judith Anderson and Christopher Lloyd also
		star.


"Once Upon A Time in America"
Warner Brothers (Ladd)
70MM Dolby Stereo
		This epic gangster tale by Sergio Leone is still penciled
		in for June 1 despite strong words between the director and
		Ladd Company regarding the latter's decision to cut the
		film from 220 to 165 minutes.  Robert De Niro and James Woods
		head a strong cast, including Treat Williams, Louise Fletcher,
		Elizabeth McGovern, Tuesday Weld, Burt Young, and Joe Pesci,
		in this saga of the Jewish Mafia, covering the years 1923
		to 1968.  Foreign markets will see the film in its original
		length.

June 8:
"Gremlins"
Warner Brothers
70MM Dolby Stereo
		Another irresistble fantasy creature with a top secret script
		and form will hit the screens and the toy stores in June.
		This Steven Spielberg production was directed by Joe Dante
		("The Howling", "Twilight Zone - The Movie") and features
		a cute, furry little creature that is purchased as a pet
		for a businessman's son with a few caveats: foremost,
		never, ever let water fall on it.  It has a tendency to
		multiply and eat things, like dogs and people.
		Zach Galligan and Phoebe ("Lace") Cates star.

"Streets of Fire"
Universal
70MM Dolby Stereo
		Walter ("48 Hours") Hill directs this rock and roll fantasy
		about a soldier of fortune (Michael Pare) who seeks to 
		rescue his kidnapped rock singer ex-girlfriend, played
		by Diane Lane ("A Little Romance").  

"Top Secret"
Paramount
		The writing-directing trio of Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, and
		David Zucker, who gave us "Airplane!", are back with a World
		War II spoof set in the present!?  Val Kilmer and Lucy 
		Gutteridge star alongside Peter Cushing and Omar Sharif.

 
"Beat Street"
Orion
Dolby Stereo
		The first break dancing movie of the summer will be the 
		Harry Belafonte-David Picker production which stars Rae
		Dawn Chong ("Quest for Fire") and a cast of unknowns from
		the streets of New York.  Stan Latham directs. 

June 15:

 "Ghostbusters"
Columbia
70MM Dolby Stereo
		Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd reunite for the first time since
		Saturday Night Live in a wild comedy about poltergeists       
		descending on New York City parapsychologists.  Directed
		by Ivan Reitman ("Meatballs", "Stripes"), Sigourney Weaver
		co-stars along "SCTV" alumni Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis. 
		Ackroyd and Ramis wrote the screenplay, which features many 
		visual effects.

"Rhinestone"
20th-Fox
Dolby Stereo
		Cabbie Sylvester Stallone sings as country and western
		saloon owner Dolly Parton eggs him on.  Richard Farnsworth
		joins the fun in this New York City-lensed film, directed
		by Bob Clark ("Porky's"), co-written by Stallone and Phil
		Alden Robinson.

June 22:

"The Karate Kid"
Columbia
		John Avildsen, Oscar-winning director of "Rocky" returns
		with another underdog-learns-to-fight-and-makes-good story,
		though this time it's a teenager played by Ralph Macchio ("The
		Outsiders").  Advance word is good on this Jerry Weintraub
		production co-starring Pat Morita.

"The Last Starfighter"
Universal (Lorimar)
70MM Dolby Stereo
		Robert Preston plays an interstellar recruiter who gets
		a teenage video game champ (Lance Guest) from Earth involved
		in an intergalactic plan to save the universe.  Catherine
		Mary Stewart, Dan O'Herlihy and Norman Snow co-star in this
		Nick Castle film which features mind-blowing digital scene
		simulation effects.

"The Pope of Greenwich Village"
MGM/UA
		Two of the hottest young talents of the 80's, Mickey Rourke
		("Diner") and Eric Roberts ("Star 80") star as cousins who
		get involved in a "foolproof" heist.  The Stuart Rosenberg
		film also stars Daryl Hannah ("Splash"), Burt Young, Kenneth
		McMillan and Geraldine Page.

"Buckaroo Banzai"
20th-Fox
Dolby Stereo
		This one concerns a 20th century renaissance man.  He's an
		author, a neurosurgeon, a rock star, etc. Written and directed
		by W.D. Richter ("Brubaker"), the capable cast includes
		Peter Weller ("Shoot the Moon"), John "Ubiquitous" Lithgow,
		Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum ("The Big Chill"), and Christopher
		Lloyd.
