In reply to the question about modem control, I would like to suggest an an alternative: ModemWorks. ModemWorks is a "communications construction set" for writing message systems, terminal programs and other modem driven routines. All modem support routines are accessed via the ampersand (&) hook from Basic. Over 50 commands are available, including COPY, FILES, and XMODEM send and receive routines. Currently supports the Novation Apple-Cat and Hayes-compatible external modems at 300, 1200, and 2400 baud, and drivers for other types of modems are being developed. ModemWorks is put out by a collective of programmers known as Living Legends Software. Their stuff is freeware. The address is 1915 Froude Street, San Diego, CA 92107. Or call (619) 222-3722 So there you have it: easy and elegant modem control from Basic. Al Willis Boston University - - - - -

Thanks to Al Willis for posting the information about ModemWorks. As the author of the program, I feel inclined to insert one brief note for anyone interested in obtaining the program. Although Living Legends Software distributes ModemWorks as freeware, the program is VERY USELESS without the accompanying 130-page programmer's guide. In order to make our profit, we sell the manual (along with the latest version of the software) for $30. (Didn't want anyone to get dissappointed if they got a hold of the diskette and found themselves in the dark without any documentation....) We normally don't put freeware disks only into the mail unless you send a self-addressed stamped disk mailer. A demo version of ModemWorks can be found on CompuServe in the Data Library (DL), but it's an old version. --Morgan Davis UUCP: [ akgua, hplabs!hp-sdd, sdcsvax, noscvax ] !crash!pnet01!pro-sol!mdavis ARPA: crash!pnet01!pro-sol!mdavis@nosc
