[comp.sys.apple] Diagnostics Software

gviernes@WHEELER-EMH.ARPA (12/03/86)

I need a diagnostic program to check the speed of my disk drives, preferrably
one which can do the check as I'm adjusting the drive. Any suggestions?

I highly recommend two programs. First, Copy II+ (any version) has an
excellent disk speed adjustment utility. It displays the speed in digital
readout (199.0 to 201.0 is normal). Second, and perhaps better, is the
Verbatim Disk Analyzer. This utility checks all functions of the disk drive
including speed, clamping, read/write, and radial alignment.

Glenn,

Central Point Software's Copy][+ provides just such a diagnostic tool. I
have used it a few times and it works fine.

Apple has created a drive diagnostic program. It requires a scratch disk
to do the testing, and you should be able to get it for free from you
local apple dealer. If your dealer won't give it to you, go to another
dealer with a reasonable policy about such things.

I use Locksmith to check and adjust the speed of my disk drives, and it works
very well. You can adjust the drive speed while the test is running, and your
results are updated on the screen as you work. I've had trouble getting
Locksmith to boot with the cover off my Disk ][, but once I boot it and run
the speed test, I can slide the cover forward to get at the speed
potentiometer.

I believe Nibbles Away and Copy ][+ also have speed test utilities.

Copy II + is a good package for this, but it only has drive speed
adjustment, as far as disk diagnostics go. It does have other nice utiliti
utilities though.

Copy II+ has a good drive speed checking (and setting)
utility, plus lots of other goodies I couldn't live
without.

It gives you the speed in milliseconds rather than RPM,
so you'll have to remember that a larger number = a
slower speed (200 mS = 300 RPM).

Copy II+ seems more accurate than some of the others
I've tried. It gives you *real* numbers, not a useless
graph, and it's very easy to adjust the speed of your
drive on the fly.
