You don't need a parallel to serial converter - you need a serial to parallel 
converter.  I've seen boxes that do either conversion, and they do work.  As 
for Epson-compatible graphics, most software allows you to specify the printer 
you're using.  Some programs, notably MousePaint, will work only with an 
ImageWriter.  There can be severe difficulties in getting AppleWorks to work 
with printers other than Apple.  Whether it's worth it to you to get that 
30-cps speed advantage is a decision based on the specific software *you* will 
be using.
