[comp.sys.apple] communications for //e

anthes@geocub.UUCP (Franklin Anthes) (12/21/86)

I have already posted this message once, but I don't think it made it
to the states. Sorry if you've already seen it once.

I would like to know if there exists a communications program for
an apple //e which meets the following requirements :

runs under Prodos : ( so as to be able to use 3.5 inch drive )
good macros : ( looping, string matching etc. )
	vt100 emulation : ( preferably with insert/delete char )
	kermit/xmodem : ( xmodem not obligatory )
file capture : ( ability to back up in capture buffer,
and have overflow saved in a file )

I would like to be able to get all my messages downloaded to the apple
with one macro, so as to be able to save connection time. I have tried
Ascii Express, and Access II. Ascii doesn't fit the bill because the macros
are'nt powerful enough ( no looping ) and the version I tried out ran under
dos 3.3. Access II seemed to be what I was looking for, but it was very
buggy ( this was version 1.0 ), in its terminal emulation, and its macros.
Has Access been improved any? I saw that version 1.2 is out now.

On a completely different subject, I read a while back that 3.5 inch drives
could be exchanged between the apple // and the Macintosh, but only in one
direction. Could some kind soul tell me which way it works, and which way it
does'nt.

Many thanks to Rick for the tech notes, It is really nice to have some
up to date information for once.

I think Ascii Express v4.3 ProDOS is one of the best. I don't know too
much about the macros, but I think they do have looping capabilities...
and they're probably the most powerful available for the //e. You might
want to take a look at the new Mousetalk AE (also by Ascii Express) which
uses mousetext and windows and seems to have fewer bugs.

Oh, and you might want to try Commworks by PBI software. It has many of
the same features as AE but uses Appleworks style menus.
