[comp.sys.apple] Playing host to an IBM?...

SJDMK@UNO.BITNET (01/04/87)

How can I let someone using a Leading Edge call up my Apple and
us talk together?

We tried it but no matter what either of us did everything he typed
stayed on the same line and wrote over what he typed last line.
(no line feeds).

He tried calling me. I tried calling him. He set his parity different
and so did I. I tried Access and AEPro.

What do the settings have to be? Apparently I wasn't lucky enough
to try the correct one.

Thanks,

                            Steve

Here's what's happening. Your options as far as hardware are set
correctly, from what you've said. But his end is stripping nl (line
feeds) and your end isn't inserting them. That's filtering that's going on
in the comm program that isn't related to parity, etc.

Different programs handle it differently. Yours expects the linefeeds
to be transmitted, while his expects yours to insert them after CRs.

It is usually an option that can be set with most comm programs.

Does that help?

The problem is that each time the <RETURN> key was hit by both of you, only
a Carrige Return <CR> was sent. That told the computer to return the cursor
to the left margain, but it didn't tell it to move to a new line...

There are several solutions to this problem. One is to make both computers
SEND a Line Feed <LF> with each <CR>. Another is to make each computer
interpret each incoming <CR> to be an <CR><LF> combination.

Ascii Express has a little feature in the Install, that is called
"Auto-LF at Half Duplex" or something. That means that when you are at
half-duplex (local echo on), I believe that AE sends an <LF> with each
<CR>. It think that's right.

Also, I believe the "Z" option (Format) should be ON, and that I think converts
incoming <CR>s into a <CR><LF> combination.

This problem has nothing to do with parity, word size, or stop bits.

I hope that I'm right with technicalities about AE Pro.

I hope that it works!

Ascii Express has a feature called chat mode. When
you are typing stuff to him enter control Q followed by a k (I
think). The program for the PC may have something like it.
