[net.movies] Responses to the "Where's the Hitch?" in "Trouble with Harry"

moriarty@uw-june.UUCP (05/02/84)

Many people were very helpful in getting info about where Hitchcock is in
"The Trouble With Harry"; however, not many agreed. Maybe someone, armed
with this info, can go and examine the film again. I had initially posted
the question for a friend who had seen it. Below are the responses I got.

Just saw it last night (previously in 1967!). I came to the conclusion
that he must have been the millionaire's chauffeur, but only because there
was no other person it could possibly have been. PLEASE POST RESPONSES.
I would like to know where I was wrong. Maybe I should go back for a
second showing! (BTW, I am a Hitchcock fan and have seen all of his movies
-- except Rope -- that he had made since 1935!).

Beware that some prints of Hitchcock's films have had the classic "director
appears in background" cut out by [ugly] projectionists and [nasty] theatre
owners.

About a quarter of the way through the movie, he can be seen in
a bowler hat wandering past the vegetable (and paiting) stand
outside the general store....

Can't remember, but no doubt someone else will tell you.
What I will tell you is where you can *look it up*.
Find a copy of Francois Truffaut's book "Hitchcock". It was written
during the mid-60's, I think. A good library should have it, unless
it's been ripped off. (The copy I read was missing 6 pages...) It is
a detailed, appreciative study of Hitchcock and every one of his films
up to the date of the book, and somewhere there is a long footnote listing
all of Hitchcock's appearances, or maybe all of them that aren't mentioned
explicitly in the text of the book.

At one point, the captain is shown from a distance as he is walking
over to the woman's house for tea. The profile of the captain
matches that of Hitchcock. This must be where he made his appearance.

The long footnote in the Truffaut/Hitchcock book does not mention
The Trouble with Harry. I looked it up right after seeing the film
and not being able to find Hitchcock in it. I wonder if he was there or
not?
