[comp.sys.apple] ][e update

Xc60039@Portland.BITNET.UUCP (01/24/87)

Lately, I've been trying to expand my ][e. What I plan on doing is add
a printer, upgrade my memory, and possibly purchase a modem. I presenly own
a Super Serial Card and have been told that I now need a second card to run
both the printer and modem at one time.
I've been in contact with a couple of Apple computer dealers, and they
have told me that I should buy a PERSONAL modem. Are there any other 1200 or
2400 baud modems that might be as reliable or be on the same quality level
as the PERSONAL modem?
Also, my father wants a 15" carriage return Imagewriter. Since we've been
looking around we've come across many other printers, but the prices range
from about $325 for a Brother (not my first choice) to $650 for some of the
better brands. Anyone got any information or reviews on Imagewriter, or could
you tell me which wide-carriage printer they prefer and why.
As far as the memory expansion goes, I was thinking of upgrading from 128k
to 256k. Do you find that 256k is too little memory? I do a lot of
wordprocessiing and have the tendancy to write programs which exceed present
memory limitations. One of my problems may be that I don't know how to tap
into reserved memory locations, worring about blowing up my programs. I've
been told that if I wish to user Appleworks I'll need a Ramworks expansion
card. I'll admit that I do use Appleworks quite a lot, but if I buy the
Ramworks card wil I still be able to write extensive programs?
One last note, at work we have a few Apple ][e's which except lower case
commands. The Apples have the apple 80 col card w/64k, super serial
card, and apple disk drive controller card. Is there any way that I could
make my apple accept lower case commands? My ][e is not enhanced, would that
make any difference?

If you're going to upgrade memory, don't stop at 256k. Go to at least 512, or
better 1 meg (prices not bad at sales). RamWorks III, Appleworks 2.0, and
SuperMacroworks is a powerful combination (you'll probably want to add a
mouse to may use of the mouse option that MacroWorks/SuperMacroworks adds
to appleWorks). If a add a AE transwarp card, you will not only increase
speed by about 3.5, but also add in a 65C02 processor. You will therefore
have all the commands of an enhanced //e.
