From medin@cod.nosc.mil (Ted Medin): > Other than the extra instructions what would replacing the 6502 with > a 65c02 do for a //e (old one) or a II+ ????? > Thanks in advance. > Ted Nothing perceptible. Obviously, it won't run faster. The only additional advantages it will have are slightly better noise immunity and a sharply decreased power consumption. The noise immunity will help your machine weather some frizz on the power line, and the reduced power consumption will allow the 65C02 to run somewhat cooler. Ted and others are asking the same question in one form or the other recently and I would like to add my experience with both II+ and //e > Other than the extra instructions what would replacing the 6502 with >a 65c02 do for a //e (old one) or a II+ ????? >Thanks in advance. Ted Replacing Just the 6502 on a //e has little to offer from my experience with the //e we have here. The few advatages that we have found come from the newer Roms which allow us to use a few software packages notedly Supercalc 3a (which by the way we run on both IBMs and apples so that data is transferable) but not to regress even with that advantage we have in a number of cases put back the character roms so that the display appears properly in older software. As for speed there is realy no gain as most software is still designed to run with the 6502 so few programs use the added instructions. As well a look back though some of my old magazines tells me that only one little used instruction operates in fewer cycles. So where is the gain to be found??? As for the II+ well I have one in old faithful at home but often find that software designed for the II+ will not work with the 65C02 in it. Seems that a lot of programers were using the pseudo opcodes that are real in the 65C02 and the programs BOMB. As well any software that uses the 65C02 generally both uses the //e bank switched (64K) memory and looks for the ID bits which are a little difficult to add to a II+. So from my point of view with out the Rom upgrade on a //e you wasting you money and if you do keep the old chips there are plug in boards available now to let you switch back if you not stuck with a fully soldered board. With the II+ well apple seems to have abandoned us so I'm keeping my old faithful and turning it into a monitor for my Greenhouse. I'm looking to a GS for my future.

what is the difference in speed between the 65c02 and the 65802? ---Ben
