I haven't actually used one, but you might want to look at the 800K 3-1/2 inch
drives sold by Leading Edge (the Laser 128 people). They use a universal disk
controller (also Leading Edge) that will drive two 5-1/4 floppies, two 3-1/2
floppies (either 400K or 800K) or one of each. About $300 will get you the
card and one 3-1/2 drive. ProDOS will boot from these drives, but DOS 3.3
will not, I believe.

I am using Apple Unidisk on my ][c and ][e. Acquired them a few weeks ago, via
Apple Educational Discound program purchase. The are very good, fast, easy to
use, and can, if necessary, be serviced by local Apple people. I should have
been more specific. It's Unidisk 3.5. Provides 800K.

By the way, I just tried ProLink, a program that allows a Macintosh with a
800k 3.5 in drive to read Apple ][ 3.5" text (ASCII) files written under
ProDos (e.g., AppleWorks), and allows Mac text files to be written to a
800k disk that the Apple ][ can read. It works well, and easily, in both
directions.

When this discussion about 3.5 inch drives got started several people
recommended the Universal Disk controller card and the 3.5's from Central
Point Software. Somewhere along the line someone said that the UDC did
not fit in the //gs case. I tried this out and my UDC fits fine. Has
anyone else had problems? Was there an older model of this card that
didn't fit? My impression of the //gs case was that it was larger than
the //e case (no slope in front). The only complaint I've heard is that
there is more room behind the card, between the back edge of the card and
the back of the case. This evidently allows some small cards like parallel
printer cards to be inserted backwards, ie with the chips facing the power
supply. This could be a problem for new users. Anyone had such a problem
or heard of one like this?

(More accurately, Re: Cards that don't fit the IIgs)

I have a PCPI Applicard, which does fit in the IIgs case, but ever so tightly.
I can close the lid, but doing so causes the top of the case to bulge upward
slightly. Consequently, I don't keep the Applicard in the machine at all - I
put it in only when I need CP/M (which, fortunately, isn't often) and while
it's in I leave the top off.

Just my two cent's worth.....
