I have had good luck with a company called Qubie (they advertise in PC magazine, though I don't have the ad with me). They have a 1200 baud external modem for $150. I have installed 2 of them, and one is hooked up to my Apple II+ at the moment. The advantages they offer are twofold. 1) The construction is VERY SOLID. The case is metal, not plastic. All in all an impressively solid package. 2) The switches are Hayes identical, not just compatible. This is important if you have ever, as I have, tried to install a modem where your manual gives a list of Hayes switch settings and the manual for your clone (the clone I had problems with was from Prometheus) reads "for switch 2 read switch 7 for switch 3 read switch 5 backwards" (These are meant to be illustrative, not literal). In any case Qubie had the same 8 switches meaning the same thing. The lights are also exactly the same as the SmartModem. Hope this helps, Lyman P.S. Usual disclaimer about not being the brother-in-law of the president of Qubie etc. Just a satisfied installer (both of their modems I have installed were bought by other people) P.P.S. I wasn't as impressed with their 2400 baud external. It doesn't share points 1 or 2.
