Given recent messages asking about compatibility of Apple II software on the IIGS, I am resending the following message. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - You should be aware of the following general guideline in regards to Apple IIGS compatibility to IIE software. According to the Project and Product Managers for the IIGS, incompatibilities with Apple II software generally occur when a publisher used a copy protection scheme that did not follow Apple II specs. So, if a program is not copy protected, it is pretty safe to assume that it will run on the IIGS. If it is copy protected, proceed with caution. Note: This does not mean all copy protected software won't work, only those that did things outside the Apple II specs. Hope you find this helpful. --Mark

I'm in the process of testing my Apple II software collection on the IIGS. So far, even most of the copy-protected software boots and appears to run okay, although in several instances I couldn't boot it directly but had to "pre-boot" some other software, e.g. Penguin's Transylvania double-res, first. I don't know why this would help, but my guess is that it sets some soft switches that are just ASSUMED by the difficult software. I have found a few games that I can't get to run on the IIGS at all. I'll post a list of what worked and what didn't when I finish my investigation.

> > Note: This does not mean all copy protected software won't work, only > those that did things outside the Apple II specs. > It is bad enough when software that you were using for a few years won't boot one day because your drive is a little out of whack, now to find out that there are limits that APPLE sets for copy protection schemes that are exceeded by some publishers! I think a listing of these companies and their products should be made public and a general boycott of these items be started. -- ________________________________________ This is the voice of world control, | Mike Davis we bring you peace, | ihnp4!ihlpm!jmdavis the peace you need to survive. - C:TFP |_________________________
