I have just talked with a representative of Pecan Software about their Power System Family of Apple IIGS software development tools. He says that they operate in 16-bit mode, but do not yet support Toolbox calls. He further says that in about a month they will begin to release compilers which *do* support Toolbox calls. Does anyone have any experience with these PASCAL based tools for the IIGS? Specifically, I would like to know how much memory is required for the system. The person I talked to thought that 128K was enough for the programming environment software Pecan is selling. He was not emphatic, however, which makes me a little nervous. I am searching for software development systems or languages that can run on the standard IIGS memory configuration. (The 128K I mentioned above refers to the IIGS side of RAM.) Also, does the software come in 5.25" format (I forgot to ask him this one)? Thanks for any information on this matter. ========================================================================= Disclaimer: This posting does not reflect the position or policy either of the Naval Ocean System Center or Computer Sciences Corp. =========================================================================

The Pecan Pascal systems are the current embodiments of UCSD Pascal. I don't know about their current system for the //gs, but their earlier systems ran under the P-System not Prodos. If I were you I would not develop anything for the //gs that runs outside of the Prodos environment. If you do you can forget about hard disks, some ram disks, 3.5 inch drives , desk accessories, etc. etc. Check with them very carefully before buying on this point. TML Pascal and Kayan Pascal are both new Pascal systems for the //gs that take advantage of the new features and run under Prodos. That gives them the ability to run all of those Prodos devices, and more importantly to let other programs coexist with yours. Rick Fincher rangerhell m w
