[net.movies] From novel to incomplete movie

rh@mit-eddie.UUCP (Randy Haskins) (05/16/84)

Of the moderate length novels I've read that became movies, I think
they were just about all blown (strange, I can't think of an example
of movie-I've-seen;book-I've-read, but I *know* there are some...).
The one example I can think of to counter this is The World According
to Garp. While they did leave out a lot, I think they got most of
the high points (except a friend of mine didn't think the anti-rape
theme came through strong enough...)

The only movie I've ever seen that faithfully followed the book (even
including exact dialogue!) was "A Clockwork Orange." Even so, I guess
Burgess was upset with the movie because it made Alex out to be kind of
cute and sort of a hero, instead of the piece of slimey scum that he was
supposed to be. But I think that was largely due to the charm of Malcolm
MacDowall (he just couldn't help it!).

New way? What's this about a NEW way?
