Generally, I get connected to wherever I call and the other end hangs up on termination. However, systems and modems are flaky, and I do occassionally have a need to send the modem (I have a Hayes Smartmodem at home and a Robotics 212A in the office) a hangup. Some commware sends the modem a whole string of "setup" codes, some of which apparently make it difficult to convince the modem to respond to commands while connected. I can fix that problem by sending the modem ATZ (reset to default) before I dial. Kermit tells the modem nothing, so it doesn't have that problem. If I get connected to a modem that won't respond, I've found that the Hayes standard +++ (wait for "OK") and ATH (tell modem to hangup) get the job done (some clones may want ATH0 to hang up).
