[comp.sys.apple] SOFTERM II FOR 128K IIe and IIc

tom@MITRE-BEDFORD.ARPA (McCarthy) (05/07/87)

Hi all:

I have a version of Softerm II that supposedly will run on the 128 IIe and on
a IIc. It came with a plug in slot card for the IIe. Supposedly there is a
plug in adapter for the IIc that doesn't need a hardware card. The program
can also use the "open apple" and "closed apple" keys for S1 and S2. The
manual claims there is no keyboard mapping for S3.

I need S3 for a VT100 emulation (using a IIc), but I don't want to send
Softronics the $35.00 they want to ship me a "game port" switch I feel I
should have gotten anyway for the large sum of money I paid for this program.
If I get the switch, I have to send back the slot card and lose my Softerm II
capabilities on machines without 128K forever!!

Has anyone figured out how to map S3 on a IIc keyboard, so I don't have to
dump any more money into this program? Any response will be much appreciated.

Thanks much.

There are two solutions to your problem. On page 3.51 of the softerm
manual it describes how to use a routine called Keyboard Translate
Utility. What this does is to allow you define the keys you want.
For instance, suppose you want to use some key that has a sequence
S3 D. All you do is define a key that you are not using such as CRTL-D
that will emulate a S3 D when pressed. Any key on the apple keyboard
can be redefined to anything you want. I don't have time to go into
details right now, finals and stuff, but if you need further help, I'll
see what I can do. As for the other solution, you can use the joystick
as S3. The buttons are S1 and S2 and if you move the joystick in some
direction (forget which way) you can get S3, but I dont' think you can get
S3 by itself this way. I think you have to press either one of the buttons
to get the S3. So any other S key in combination with S3 you can get but you
can't get S3 alone, if I remember correctly.
     Hope that helps.
