Shame on you, everyone should know that Roger Corman is the founder of
New World Pictures, the inventors of "low-budget". New World is responsible
for most of the "The <whatever> That Ate <wherever>" type movies. They (along
with Hammer) also made most of the low-budget horror flicks running on the
late-late-late show. They've been around since the 50's, but have only been
doing "major" releases for the last few years (best known is probably "Battle
Beyond the Stars").
Corman and New World discovered a lot of people who went on to be real
heavyweights in "the biz". Jack Nicholson and Francis Coppola for example
(Corman made a cameo in the Godfather II as a member of the Senate committe
investigating Michael Corleone). New World provided a place where they could
practice their craft a build a reputation.
All the New World pictures have a great tongue-in-cheek attitude, "Big Bad
Mama", currently running on Cinemax, is classic New World. They also made one
called "Hollywood Boulevard" which was an hilarious spoof on New World itself.
New World pictures is what gives meaning to Joe Bob Briggs' life. It's the
real thing: high quality trash. I love it.

I thought New World was a rather NEW company. Didn't roger do work
for American International in the 60's ?

Before he began "New World Pictures" (which is out here in
the West L.A. area) Roger was the absolute KING of "American International"
low-budget horror films. The list of his classics is IMMENSE and I
won't even try to list any here.

Since there appears to be quite a bit of interest in this dude, I
will mention that Heavy Metal magazine had an interview with
him a couple of months back (March or April, maybe). I didn't
read it, though.

Ah, DEATHRACE 2000 features *David* Carradine (of KUNG FU fame), not John.

I believe that the most recent "graduate" of Corman's schlock mill (but what
wonderful schlock!) is Joe Dante, who, after directing ALLIGATOR for Corman,
went on to do THE HOWLING and the "It's a *Good* Life!" section of TWILIGHT ZONE
--- THE MOVIE. His most recent movie is the Spielberg-produced GREMLINS.
Corman's New World studios is also responsible for that latest of mid-
night movie cult films, ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL, which featured a very well
done giant mouse costume created by Rob Bottin (effects man for THE HOWLING and
THE THING). Bottin also did the monster costumes for HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP,
which I believe is another New World film.
Whatever one says about Corman, one has to admit that he has fostered
some great talent.
